The short answer: in many workplaces, yes, someone must be trained in first aid, depending on how far you are from medical help and what hazards your employees face. CPR is not spelled out as a universal requirement, but it is part of most first aid programs and is specifically expected in some high-risk situations.

This guide explains what the OSHA rules actually say, how OSHA has interpreted them, and how to choose training for your team. It is general information, not legal advice. Your employer, safety officer, or state plan has the final word on what your site needs.

Need trained responders? SimpleCPR courses are based on OSHA guidelines, 100% online, and most take 60 minutes or less. Paragraph (b) reads:

“In the absence of an infirmary, clinic, or hospital in near proximity to the workplace which is used for the treatment of all injured employees, a person or persons shall be adequately trained to render first aid. Adequate first aid supplies shall be readily available.”

Paragraph (c) adds that where employees may be exposed to injurious corrosive materials, suitable facilities for quick drenching or flushing of the eyes and body must be provided.

OSHA’s Medical and First Aid page summarizes the expectation this way: employers must provide medical and first aid personnel and supplies commensurate with the hazards of the workplace. In other words, the more dangerous the work, the more preparation is expected.

What “near proximity” means

The key phrase is “near proximity.” In a 2007 letter of interpretation, OSHA explained how it reads that phrase:

In workplaces where serious accidents such as falls, suffocation, electrocution, or amputation are possible, emergency medical care should be available within no more than 3 to 4 minutes.

In workplaces like offices, where those life-threatening injuries are unlikely, a longer response time of up to 15 minutes may be reasonable.

So if your site is not within that window of an infirmary, clinic, or hospital that treats your injured employees, or if you cannot count on emergency services arriving in time, you need trained first aid responders on site. For many workplaces, especially those in rural areas, with long response times, or with serious hazards, that means trained staff on every shift.

The same letter notes that the construction industry standard, 29 CFR 1926.50(c), contains a similar requirement, and that certain industries have their own mandatory first aid training rules, including logging (29 CFR 1910.266(i)(7)) and electric power generation, transmission, and distribution (29 CFR 1910.269(b)).

OSHA also points out that interpretation letters explain existing requirements but cannot create additional employer obligations. The standard itself sets the rule; the letters show how OSHA applies it.

Does OSHA require CPR specifically?

The general industry first aid standard says “adequately trained to render first aid.” It does not list CPR by name for every workplace. In practice, though:

Cardiac arrest is exactly the kind of emergency where the 3-to-4-minute window matters. Brain damage can begin within minutes without oxygen, and a trained coworker with an AED is often the only person close enough to help in time.

Most workplace first aid programs include CPR and AED use as a core skill.

Some industry-specific standards, like those cited above for logging and electric power work, carry their own first aid training requirements, and employers in those fields should read their standard closely.

The practical answer for most employers: if you need trained first aid responders, train them in CPR/AED as well. A combined CPR & First Aid course covers both on one card.

Who decides what training counts?

This is the part many training providers gloss over, so here it is plainly: the employer decides whether a training program meets its needs, based on its hazards, its distance from medical care, its industry standard, and any state plan rules. OSHA’s standards describe what employees must be able to do; they do not name a single required course.

Some employers, insurers, and industries require an in-person, hands-on skills component, especially for responders in high-hazard settings. Others accept online training. Before you buy for a team, confirm with your safety manager or the people responsible for your safety program. Among other things, it requires employers to:

Have a written Exposure Control Plan (1910.1030(c)(1))

Offer the hepatitis B vaccine at no cost to employees with occupational exposure (1910.1030(f))

Train each employee with occupational exposure at no cost and during working hours, at initial assignment and at least annually after that (1910.1030(g)(2)(i)–(ii))

Keep training records for 3 years (1910.1030(h)(2))

An online course like Bloodborne Pathogens / Infection Control covers the general knowledge portion. The general industry standard requires trained first aid responders when an infirmary, clinic, or hospital is not in near proximity, and some industry standards have their own first aid training rules. Most first aid programs include CPR.

How many employees need first aid training?

The standard says “a person or persons.” Enough people should be trained that someone is available on every shift and in every work area where response time matters.

Is online first aid and CPR training enough for OSHA?

OSHA does not name a specific course. Your employer decides whether a program meets its needs, and some employers or industries require hands-on skills practice. SimpleCPR courses are based on OSHA guidelines; confirm with your safety program before you buy.

Are SimpleCPR courses OSHA certified?

OSHA does not certify or endorse individual CPR or first aid courses. SimpleCPR courses follow OSHA guidelines and are nationally accepted.

How often does workplace first aid training need to be renewed?

CPR and first aid cards are typically valid for two years. Bloodborne pathogens training under 29 CFR 1910.1030 must be repeated at least annually.
